Why Did You Choose to Selfpublish Instead of Taking The Traditional Route?
My first book was traditionally published with a small press, and while they were great people to work with, I found myself frustrated that I couldn't change things like covers, keywords, or price without having to go through a whole process. I work in marketing and wanted to be able to control those things on my own. I've self-published three books now and I love it, I'm not sure I'll ever to a trad book again.
Did You Set Out To Become an Author as Your Main Profession?
I didn't set out making writing my career, but the more books I write the more I would like to be able to support myself and my family with my books. I find myself at my 9-5 job thinking about what I need to do for my next book, or checking on my sales on Amazon.
Which Authors Have Inspired You The Most?
Wow, there are a ton! I find what Marie Force has done with career to be very inspiring! She built her career from the ground up, and now she is actively trying to help other authors just starting out. I hope if I ever got to that level I would do the same thing.
Tell Us About Your Book:
Standby is book 1 in the WQUZ News Series. Mira, the main character, is a reporter for WQUZ news. She clashes with a reporter from another station in the field, but when he starts pursuing finds herself wanting to let him in. She is also contending with a busy career, an ailing father, and an obsessed fan that is becoming increasingly dangerous. Standby has a little bit of everything: tears, laughs, suspense, and plenty of sexy times.
What Is Your Favorite Part of This Book, and Why Do You Think Readers Will Enjoy It?
I love the banter between Mira and Chris. Mira doesn't back down, and gives just as good as she takes. I love strong female characters, and Mira is most definitely that. I hope readers connect with her, and get a good laugh out of Chris and his persistence in pursuing her.
Where Do You See Self-Publishing Going In The Future?
I see myself putting more and more books out and plugging away at putting the kinds of books I love to read out there. I have a file folder FULL of ideas, and I can't wait to get to them.
Who Designed Your Cover Art?
I did! I am a photographer and amateur graphic designer, so when I decided to self-pub I knew I wanted to make my own covers. I also have a slight addiction to searching stock photo sites. You can find some hilarious stuff there.
Where did the idea for your book come from?
I worked in the news industry in various roles for over a decade. Journalism is filled with all kinds of crazy characters, and I knew I had to use some of that in my writing. While none of the characters are based on a particular person I've worked with, they are kind of a mashup of several people. There is one line in the book that I pulled straight from my former work in the newsroom. I once had a caller tell me he liked to watch a certain reporter with the volume off. He said, "I love to watch her lips move." It was uber creepy and had to include it.
