Why Did You Choose to Selfpublish Instead of Taking The Traditional Route?
Self publishing will get my debut novel into the market faster than using a traditional publisher. Additionally, I’d like to have more control over it. This includes the financial aspects, production and artwork. Of course, self publishing doesn’t come without challenges. For instance, I have to wear two hats at the same time: as an author and as a business owner. Thankfully, there are a huge amount of resources online to guide me and many authors’ groups to join. I’m happy with the route I chose.
Did You Set Out To Become an Author as Your Main Profession?
Yes, I’d been writing on and off since graduating from the university. I’ve been traditionally published in my home country of Malaysia. Now, residing in New England with my husband, I decided to write for the English language audience. I learned that no matter what I was doing the author in me lingered as compared to my former profession as a university lecturer.
Which Authors Have Inspired You The Most?
Or should I ask which story inspired me the most? I started reading Cinderella, Snow White, and all the fairy tales I could get my hands on when I was seven years old. Back then, I didn’t understand the words (written in English), but I was captivated by the beautiful illustrations of the castles, the princesses and princes. I just love a story with a happy ending. But, back to the question above, I was inspired by many authors throughout the years leading to getting my first English language novel published.
Some of them include John Grisham, Mark Twain, Shannon Stacey, Emily Giffin, Lauren Layne, Sarah Dessen and Meg Cabot. Each has inspired me in different ways. I also read beyond the genre I write. I don’t limit myself to romance. I read suspense and thrillers, young adult, women’s fiction and children’s story books. However, my favorite story would always end with the couple living Happily Ever After (HFA) or Happy for Now (HFN).
Tell Us About Your Book:
My debut novel, Catching Lily, is a contemporary romance. I was fascinated by outside cafés, the cute little boutiques and shops along Newbury Street, in Boston and other small towns in Massachusetts. That was how my story started. Lily Perfect, the main character, wants to have her own boutique. And getting the attention from a dangerously handsome, sexy and mysterious man is the last thing she had in her mind. But, that’s exactly what she gets. Because Alan Perry knows she’s hiding a secret. And he’s determined to uncover it before she reveals his…. Little does Alan know, he may have just met his match.

What Is Your Favorite Part of This Book, and Why Do You Think Readers Will Enjoy It?
I love all parts of Catching Lily: the cute meet, the challenges and obstacles she faces in turning her dream boutique into a reality and the man who wants to help, but only turns her life upside down. The scene at the Copley Library is the turning point for me and is the first of many favorite parts in the book. The scenes in this story would make readers laugh, surprised, sad, have a good cry and helplessly fall in love with the hero. I think readers who love contemporary romance with an element of suspense woven into the main plot would enjoy this book immensely.
Where Do You See Self-Publishing Going In The Future?
In the future, self-publishing will become the mainstream of the publishing industry. I would like to publish two more English language novels this year... and many more in the future. I also would love to help other aspiring writers to become more proactive to publish their works.
Who Designed Your Cover Art?
One of my hobbies is close-up photography where I have used a lot of my images for my website. So, when it was time to design a cover for my ebook, naturally I wanted to do it myself. So, I researched how to design a book cover and stumbled upon Derek Murphy’s online tutorial. And voila! I was creating covers left and right.
